Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be caused by:
  • Eating food and drinking water contaminated with bacteria, parasites, or viruses
  • Having a reaction to certain medications
  • Being lactose-intolerant.
There are two types of diarrhea: acute diarrhea and chronic diarrhea.

Acute diarrhea subsides after 1 or 2 days but chronic diarrhea can last more than 2 weeks.

Apart from loose bowel movements, other symptoms of diarrhea are:
  • Cramping
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Chills
  • In severe cases blood in the stools
Diarrhea causes the body to lose fluids and electrolytes thus causing dehydration. This is why it’s important to drink a lot of fluids to replace what is lost.

People who have diarrhea are advised to consume the ‘Bratty Diet.’ The Bratty diet consists of the following foods: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, tea, and yogurt.

Bananas are rich in potassium and help to put back the electrolytes which the body loses.

Brown rice and toast made from whole wheat bread are recommended. The fiber in these two foods will help to harden the loose stools.

Apple sauce and bananas contain pectin. Pectin is a ‘water-soluble fiber’ which helps to stop diarrhea.

Drinking herbal teas such as Chamomile tea or peppermint tea are also effective in reducing diarrhea.

Consuming yogurt containing the Lactobacillus microorganism helps to reduce diarrhea. Regular eating of the yoghurt will also help one to maintain a healthy digestive tract.

How to Make Chamomile Tea to Stop Diarrhea

Add 1 teaspoon of chamomile tea to a cup. Fill with the cup with boiling water. Cover with a saucer and steep for 10 minutes. Strain into another cup and drink. It’s best to drink 2 to 3 cups of the tea a day.

Blueberries are another fruit which contains pectin that helps to stop diarrhea.
