Home Remedies to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Malaria, Dengue, Encephalitis, Yellow Fever and West Nile River are diseases caused by mosquitoes.

In certain parts of the world the mosquito menace has become such a huge problem that authorities have not been able to control it. The lack of funds needed to spend on labor and chemicals for disinfecting areas where mosquito breeding grounds exist is one reason the authorities have failed in eradicating this problem.

Certain potted plants like Citronella Grass (Cymbopogon nardus), Catnip (Nepeta cataria), Peppermint (Mentha piperita) Basil, Tansy and Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) are kept on the patio, at either side of the door or on the windowsill to repel mosquitoes. The leaves are crushed to release the scents to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Listerine is a product used to get rid of mosquitoes. Buy a bottle of Listerine and pour it into a spray bottle. Keep the bottle near you and spray when mosquitoes appear.

You can also spray around areas where mosquitoes tend to enter from such as doors and windows.

Listerine contains eucalyptus oil which is an ingredient used in insect repellants.

Citronella candles are claimed by some to be effective in getting rid of mosquitoes. Buy some candles and light in rooms mosquitoes tend to frequent.

Remember, in order to breed mosquitoes need water. Therefore clean out debris and fix any damaged areas in your garden where water tends to stagnate. In this way you reduce the chances of mosquitoes breeding in your garden and entering your home.

Certain colors, smells and drinks are also said to attract mosquitoes. Listed below are a few:
  • Bright colored clothing
  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Heavy scents released from deodorants, perfumes and hairsprays.
For mosquito bites apply some honey or Aloe Vera juice as it will help reduce the swelling and itch caused by the bite.
