How to Prevent Cracked Heels

One part of the body which has only a few oil glands is the feet. This is why it’s important to moisturize the feet on a regular basis to prevent the feet from drying.

Walking barefoot and wearing footwear which exposes the heel such as slippers/flip flops can also damage heels and cause it to crack.

Make sure to keep the feet clean especially at night before going to bed since the body tends to repair skin tissues mostly at night when its at rest.

When taking a shower or bath use a pumice stone to scrub away dead skin and remove dirt on heels. Moisturize using an aloe vera based foot cream.

You can also try one of the following remedies:

1. Soak the feet in a basin of warm water for 15 minutes which has 1 teaspoon sea salt added to it. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Apply a moisturizer.

2. A good and effective homemade foot cream for dry cracked heels is to mix 1 teaspoon Vaseline with a few drops of lemon juice and massage on heels and feet on a daily basis.

3. Another popular homemade foot cream used on cracked heels is to place ¼ cup coconut oil, one tablespoon rose water and ½ teaspoon glycerin into a bowl and beat well till smooth. Massage on clean feet every night before going to bed.

How to Take Care of Your Newborn's Skin

Have you ever wondered why newborn babies are covered with light body hairs when they are born? The tiny hairs are there to protect the newborn’s skin as he makes the journey out of the womb through the birth canal and into the world.

The hairs disappear within a few days but the baby’s skin will remain soft and sensitive.

It’s important to use baby skin products which are not harsh but gentle on a newborn’s skin to protect it from damage.

Keep in mind its normal for a newborn to have tiny pimples on the nose and cheeks during the first few weeks. This is known as baby acne and is caused by being exposed to the mother’s hormones while inside the womb.

Wash your newborn’s clothes separately using a light detergent to prevent itchy skin and rashes.

Do not expose your baby to the sun. Experts says it’s best to wait until a baby is 6 months old before taking him outside when the weather is sunny. Always use a hat and baby sunscreen.

Dress your baby in cotton clothes since this type of material is gentle on baby’s skin.

When bathing your newborn do not leave him for more than 3 minutes in the water and always use plain water. Apply a baby cream after a bath to keep the skin well moisturized.

Baby Eczema Treatment with Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment

Eczema is a skin condition which can affect adults, children and even babies.

Babies who get eczema will develop a dry, itchy rash on the cheeks, forehead and scalp. If not treated on time it can move to other parts of the body.

Babies have soft natural skin and frequent washing can cause the skin to dry out resulting in eczema. Other reasons may be due to having a reaction to chemicals in the lotions, shampoo and soaps used on baby’s skin, irritants from the environment, food allergies or heat.

Always keep your baby’s skin well moisturized to protect against eczema. Dress your baby in clothes made of cotton. Babies susceptible to eczema will be comfortable in cotton clothes rather than clothing made from other materials such as wool. Wool has been known to trigger and worsen the condition.

Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment has been a treatment used for many years to treat eczema especially on babies. After your baby’s evening bath apply a thin layer of the ointment on the skin. If the rash does not seem to be healing by morning get your baby checked by a doctor.

Refrain from using commercially bought products on baby’s skin unless the doctor says its okay to. Using the wrong brands can cause serious damage to baby’s skin.

Tips to Stop Bedwetting

Children tend to react to changes and sorrow in different ways. Some may show unusual changes in their behavior while others might wet their beds.

Bedwetting is common in children who have had to face a sudden change in their life such as a death of a loved one, moving to a new home etc. A child will also wet his bed if his bladder is full and he is unable to hold the urine as he sleeps.

Bedwetting can become a serious problem if not treated for your child may continue to wet his bed even after the age of 6.

Before going to bed have your child use the bathroom.

Do not let him have any food or drinks which are rich in caffeine before going to bed.

Train your child to wake up when he has to urinate. You can do this by installing a bed wetting alarm or go into his room and wake him up at least twice during the night to take him to the bathroom. Do this for a few weeks and if he still tends to wet the bed, then its time to take your child to the doctor and seek professional help.

Home Remedies for Baldness

People in their 30’s are the ones most likely to begin losing hair. Hair loss is caused due to poor diet, hormonal changes and stress. We normally lose up to 100 hair strands but when it exceeds this amount we become susceptible to baldness.

Coconut has been used since ancient times on hair. The Kings and Queens of Sri Lanka would apply the milk and oil from coconuts onto their hair on a regular basis to maintain soft shiny, thick healthy hair.

Coconut milk is a home remedy often used to treat baldness but like many home remedies it takes sometime to work.

Take some fresh coconut milk and massage into the area where the hair is thinning out or bald. Leave overnight and wash the next morning with only warm water. Do this treatment twice a week.

To protect your scalp from baldness take 1 tablespoon of amla powder and mix with enough lime juice to make a paste. Massage the paste into the hair. Leave on hair until fully dry and rinse out with only warm water.

You can also use amla juice which you’ve extracted from the fruit and mix 2 teaspoons of fresh amla juice with two teaspoons lime juice and use the same way on hair.

What are The Types of Oils Used for Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurveda therapy which uses certain types of oils to treat a variety of ailments including eczema, bronchitis, headaches and diseases related to the lungs, heart, blood, liver and kidneys.

Sunflower oil, sesame oil and coconut oil are three common types of oils used for oil pulling. The oils should be the organic and refined variety since it will be close to its natural state without having chemicals and additives added to it.

Oil pulling should be done in the morning on an empty stomach before brushing the teeth.
To do the oil pulling, take two teaspoons of the oil and place in your mouth and begin swishing it around inside the mouth. Do this for 20 minutes. Make sure you keep your head in a straight position whilst doing the oil pulling and do not swallow any of the oil.

Make sure to relax the jaw muscles as you are swishing the oil as this will prevent the muscles from aching.

If for some reason you need to spit out the oil before the 20 minutes are up then do so and begin again with new oil. If you did the oil pulling for 5 minutes and had to spit then repeat the process for another 15 minutes with new oil. To get the most out of the treatment it’s important to swish for 20 minutes.

Finally rinse your mouth with warm water which has a little table salt added to it. More about oil pulling can be read here.
